LET´S HELP TO IMPROVE THE MATERNAL HELP

Each minute, a woman dies from causes related to pregnancy. That entails more than 500.000 deaths per year!

Around the world:

  • More than 50 millions of women have a bad reproductive health, they suffer injuries, infection and disabilities derived from the pregnancy.
  • More than 500.000 women die each year from the complications of pregnancy and childbirth.

Unfortunately Sub-Saharan Africa is the area with the biggest risk of death because of the said complications; it afflicts women from 15 to 49 years old.

Conditions able to save life such as antibiotics, surgery and the transfer to medical centres are not available for many women, especially in rural spots. These women lack of the necessary money for the transfers and suitable health services, or it is possible that they are not allowed to ask for help due to the society’s rules.

The main alternative to avoid maternal deaths is to provide a prompt access to quality obstetric services. It is also important to warranty that a midwife or a doctor is present in childbirth. A bigger access to the familiar planning, illuminated by a Christian vision can help to reduce the rate of maternal mortality, when reducing the number of pregnancies. Moreover, a recent study carried on in Africa, has demonstrated that if between each birth, 3 or more years elapse, the infantile mortality could be reduced by half. We can not forget that the maternal mortality rate is closely related with the level of the community development, the alphabetization, the women’s living conditions and their nutritional condition.

TO REFLECT:

  • How do youperceive the maternal health in your community?
  • Do you think it is necessary to improve the maternal health in your region? What are the necessary actions to achieve it?
  • What can we do, as VMY, to improve pregnant women’s conditions? Could we take part in sensitizing and/or education campaigns?
  • Could you let us know if there are programs or campaign related with this topic, in which VMY is already collaborating in?
