VINCENTIAN SPIRITUALITY AND SYSTEMIC CHANGE Since some time ago, the Vincentian Family started to talk about the “SYSTEMIC CHANGE”. What at the beginning seems to be a very original thing, it was not, because during his life and his dedication to the neediest, St. Vincent put it into practice. We can notice that in the works he carried out and in the evidence he left of these activities in his writings. Therefore, he was the precursor of a new way of understanding the charity.
From this point of view, St. Vincent did not understand service as a relief for the moment, as a punctual solution. He understood he had to transform the reality he was living in, to support from the outside the necessary changes, letting the protagonists (the poor) to change their own reality little by little, in an effective way that was able to comprise the majority of the affected in a very concrete idea: TO AVOID POVERTY AND TO ACHIEVE A REASONABLE HUMAN LIFE. In these months we have been able to read different true stories in which we were told how the structure of the system have changed and how this radical transformation of the situation has been done in certain places. All the projects start with an idea, a dream to be come true. This dream is becoming a reality little by little. The insecurity, the fear of not arriving at the planned goal and of not getting the support of the others, may make us doubt, but we have a very good basis to know that when we really wish something and we fight with hope for it, it is possible. In our daily life some attitudes of proximity to the fellow help us to discover what their necessities are:
To make the Systemic Change possible, we have to take into account the following points:
How do we come up to the poor?
Are we aware of the necessities of our nearest fellow? Do we know how to listen and how to let people act, or on the contrary, do we want to be film heroes? How many times have we been afraid before a goal we have planned? What is the most difficult aspect to achieve a “Systemic change”? What do we need to take the first step?
Christ has faced the injustices, being opposed to them and trying to change the society; some centuries later, St. Vincent has been able to organize the charity in order to get better results from simplicity, care and proximity, and we… are we able to open our mind and our heart to walk with the poor in their fight for getting a better present and future?
