Last May 5, 2016, all VMY groups in Albania, together with a great number of Vincentian Sisters (Daughters of Charity), seminarians and Vincentian priests hosted the arrival of the General Father of the Vincentian Family, General Father Gregory Gay, also known as the "Disciple of Saint Vincent". Everyone was looking forward and waiting with big joy in their hearts. The VMY Albania has received a lot of letters from him, and everyone was happy that he is coming to meet us again. He promised us that he will come back, and just like a father promising to his children that he will come back, he has kept his promise!
Everyone welcomed him with a big applause and joy. He was accompanied by his secretary, Sister Mary Clair. They enjoyed what we prepared for them as they looked at us with smiling faces and great affection even though they just had a long trip to come to Albania.
The VMY Shkoder welcomed him with a beautiful speech in English. They highlighted that by the unconditional commitment of the missionaries, priests and sisters, the people have discovered God´s goodness and love that communism has once made great efforts to extinct. They also made a brief overview of all the activities JMV Albania-Kosova made. They then expressed their great joy of his presence in this year of mercy with two members giving him a modest and symbolic present with so much love from the group.
The VMY Rreshen demonstrated wonderfully how through love we can make the world a better place to live in through the example of Saint Vincent de Paul and Saint Louise de Marillac who placed their trust faithfully to Jesus and in Mary´s love. If the youth, united in this wonderful example, and in God´s name, can make a difference. This Holy Year of Mercy, the churches have opened the holy doors and we are all invited to reflect on the corporal and spiritual works of mercy so we could pass through this door and receive the grace and forgiveness that God is offering us.
The VMY Rreshen also prepared a beautiful melody with a traditional instrument enjoyed by the Father General. The presentation was a beautiful tradition passed through generations. The VMY Durres demonstrated the gospel according to St. Matthew 25, 31:40. They then danced the song "Save the World", formed the cross to show that Jesus saved the world by giving His life for us.
At the end of the program, a traditional dance was performed by the group of Rreshen. The General Father then shared with us his happiness for the youth of VMY in Kosovo and Albania. He emphasized that the cooperation of the youth with the Daughters of Charity and the Vincentian Fathers is an example how we can save the world if we are united. He then joined us in our traditional dance showing positivity and simplicity- a perfect example of the Vincentian Spirit. A group photo was done after the dance.
Just like St. Vincent de Paul, the Father Gregory is a simple person and is worthy of his post as a wonderful Superior General of the Vincentian Family.
