Leadership Formation for Adult Leaders 2016

2016 was a year of great beginnings. VMY, USA held its first ever National VMY Formation Weekend for Leaders – hosted by the Western Region and the Daughters of Charity, Province of Los Altos Hills. VMY, USA was able to support the attendance of the National Executive Board and local leaders from the Southeast Missouri group. For the first time, the leaders from the Western Region of VMY and the leaders from Missouri were able to attend a formation weekend together.

The theme of the weekend was “The History of the Children of Mary in the United States.” Sr. Margaret Ann Gainey, D.C. the provincial archivist, and Sr. Ellen Van Zandt, D.C. the archives assistant gave the detailed history of the Children of Mary in the United States and the origin of each of the local groups including Emmitsburg and Perryville. They shared copies of the first manuals translated into English and distributed to members in both Emmitsburg and San Francisco in 1863.

Vincentian Youth Leadership Program – Lead Like Vincent

July 2016 was the pilot for the Vincentian Youth Leadership Program for VMY members. There were a total of 17 youth members and 21 adult leaders who participated in the four day formation program at the DePaul Evangelization Center, Montebello, California. The participants came from California, Arizona, Alaska and Missouri.

Each day included mass celebrated by Fr. David Nations, C.M., National Priest Advisor to VMY-USA, times of prayer, formation, group activities, recreation, swimming, projects, skits and sharing. On the second day of the program, everyone rose at 5:15 am to get ready to take a ride to skid row in Los Angeles to serve breakfast to the homeless brothers and sisters at the Midnight Mission. The evening before, the group was given some preparation guidelines for apostolic reflection. Upon their return, after mass, they took quiet time then came together for a group experience of apostolic expression – which is an essential practice of members of VMY USA.

VMY USA was able to sponsor the participation of members and leaders attending from outside of the Western Region.
